The immediate concern for markets is not simply the volume of crude removed from production, but whether the attacks signal a broader deterioration in the security environment surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and other export routes.
The waterway is critical to global energy trade, and any sustained deterioration in shipping conditions could raise freight, insurance and refining costs alongside crude prices. Reuters reported that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has already slowed after Iran threatened retaliation for US attacks.
The pressure is extending beyond crude. Higher oil prices are feeding directly into fuel markets, while European gas prices are also responding to concerns over disrupted regional supply ahead of winter. The combination risks creating a wider inflationary shock at a time when major central banks are already reassessing the direction of monetary policy.
For policymakers, the difficulty lies in distinguishing a temporary geopolitical premium from a structural supply disruption. If flows recover quickly, the price impact could fade. If infrastructure damage and shipping restrictions persist, however, the consequences could move from commodity markets into household energy bills, transport costs, industrial production and inflation expectations.
The $100 threshold therefore carries significance beyond its psychological value. A sustained breach would signal that markets are assigning a growing probability to prolonged disruption rather than a short-lived geopolitical shock.
For energy-importing economies, the challenge is becoming increasingly clear: the resilience of global supply chains is once again being tested by events concentrated in one of the world's most strategically important energy corridors.
